How the qibla direction is worked out
The qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E). On a round Earth the shortest path between two places is a great circle, so the bearing is the starting direction of that great-circle route, measured clockwise from true north.
From Bangladesh the qibla points to the west-north-west, roughly 277° to 279°. The Earth is round, so the direction on a flat map can look different from the bearing on a compass.
Tips for the live compass
- Hold the phone flat and away from magnets, metal tables and speakers, which pull the needle.
- Move the phone in a slow figure of eight to calibrate the sensor if the reading drifts.
- A phone compass reads magnetic north and can be off by a few degrees. For certainty, confirm with a mosque’s marked qibla.
